Ahhhh....that's MUCH better!! You are right,
Jim -- THAT is what a properly-fired oil-
burning steam locomotive looks like -- as
long as she has decent-quality fuel. A
slight haze above the stack: that was the
SP's spec for a properly-fired oil-burner.
Heck, even a coal-burner can can be run with
a clean stack - IF she has really GOOD coal
AND a really GOOD fireman! Look at the photos
of the NKP 765 on Horseshoe Curve this past spring
for proof of that! NO SMOKE!! (I believe the
fireman then was Steve Winicker.) And, yes, the
765 was pulling a heavy train UP the grade, and
the mandatory diesel (the NS PRR heritage loco)
was NOT doing ANY of the work =-- a point of
pride for the 765 crews.
