I have a few books with photos of Daylight locomotives in regular revenue service for the SP. Nearly all photos show the locomotives with a clean stack, a thin plume or at most, a lot of white exhaust.
All that smoke may be dramatic for some photographers, but that was not how it typically was in "real life."
