I just spoke with my Dad (Craig Thomas) who was one of the 4449's fireman at the time, and it was in fact a bad load of oil they took on at he believes Klamath Falls. Jack Wheelihan was the first to attempt to fire the 4449 with what turned out to be the bad load of oil. After Jack of course was razzed by the rest of the crew, it was determined the oil was bad and that they simply could not get the BTUs they needed from that load of oil without basically firing the crap out of the 4449. Not much that could be done at that point except get through the oil.
