"They" used 'section insulators' insuch a way that the KEY could cross the SP or the SP could cross the KEY... KEY trains and streetcars did this using BOTH pantographs and trolley poles...
In Seattle, the 600 volt streetcars crossed over the 3000 volt Milwaukee on 4th Avenue.. Same thing, "section insulators" ...
You guys are worrying about the simple stuff... When the Bridge Railway was first proposed in the Bay Area, there was like four different ideas that were studied for powering KEY trains, SP-IER trains and Sacramento Northern trains, before they finalized on the one plan they all agreed upon. I have the explicit details at hand, but will not elaborate because of space considerations..
