I was through Tillamook, OR last friday and decided take a ride in the air museum's Stearman in the hopes of catching the OCSR 2-6-2 25 from the air. We took off a little after the noon departure and with an 80 mph cruise, didn't get to see her until she and her train were stopped at Rockaway Beach.
No problem, a few steep turns over the train allowed a good look and the pilot then gestured for me to fly us back to Tillamook. When we got directly over the airfield, he reached forward, tapped me on the shoulder and then pointed down to their Grumman TBM taking off right below us. It was her first flight in 19 years. They have an extensive warbird collection and plan to move it all inland to Madras within a few years. Some examples include P-38, P-47, P-51, AU-7 (fighter-bomber version of a Corsair), A-26, P-2V, ME-109, PBY Catalina, DC-3, B-17, Martin Mauler (very rare), etc.
The pilot kept us inside of the TBM's climbing turns and we got a nice close look at her from the air. After we landed, I hustled to my truck and got a loaned digicam and managed to capture a low level pass over the airport.
Don't miss this place if you are there to ride the Garibaldi steam operation. They are friendly and accommodating and you never know what you might see up in the air. Rides available in the Stearman, AT-6, Grumman Duck, P-51 and Douglas Dauntless. There is no such thing as a bad ride!
Just my opinion.
