Tom M. and Dr. Zarkoff:
Thanks so much for the fascinating info
about the Bay Bridge! I always appreciate
learning more about this majestic and
awe-inspiring structure.
Here is what I found about the #202, from
steamlocomotive.ionfo:

"Pacific Portland Cement Co. 0-4-0T No. 202
History as provided by Brian T. Wise: This locomotive
is H.K. Porter s.n. #5512, 15 tons, 27" drivers,
9x14 cylinders, built in 1913 for the Pacific
Portland Cement Co. at Flint, CA (#202). Later
worked for McCormick and Baxter Tie and Creosoting
Co. at Stockton, CA. Purchased by Mr. Eric Thomsen
(owner/bulder of 15" Redwood Valley Railways in
Berkeley, CA). Operated by Nevada Heritage Society
in 8/1961 on new track at Virginia City, NV, then
in 1965 on track near Carson City, NV airport.
Stored near Reno until taken to Virginia City
for passenger service on revived V&T Ry. as
their #3 (second) in 1977. Stored there until 1980."

"The 202, as Erich himself related to me before he
passed on, was used in the plant at the SLC Bingham
operation, before it's time in Stockton. I don't
think Erich had any reason to lie to me about that.
It was also the last piece of (and only steam powered)
railroad equipment to run on the OAK-SFO Bay Bridge
just before the rails were pulled up.

I once saw a photo of what I thought was a steam
locomotive being used during the construction of
the Bay Bridge. She was on panel track on the East
Span upper deck, east of the cantilever section.
I do not know whether or not the locomotive that
was photographed was -- perhaps -- a diesel. Probably
was, to come to think of it.
This is an absolutely FASCINATING discussion! Thanks to
all who are contributing. I have more memories to share.
