Thanks for all that fascinating info!
I am, however, very uncertain as to when you
wrote this post. You wrote: "the seismic work
now on the drawing boards will be even more
complicated.".
When did you write this great and fascinating
and very informative piece?
Shortly after that, you wrote: "Nearly 35 years
ago...". 2013-35=1978. Did you write this back
in the mid-1990s? I am quite confused.
I think you must have written this nice piece back
in the 1990s, as you also wrote: "The repairs this
time will cost $1 billion or more." But the new
East Span is done -- it opened Labor Day this year.
It took 24 years (after the 1989 earthquake) to decide
exactly what they were going to do -- retrofit the
old East Span or build a completely new East Span --
then, once they decided they were going to build a
completely new East Span, to design the new span, and
build it -- and the new East Span cost $6.4 billion!
Nevertheless, I learned a lot from reading this interesting
piece. I didn't know the contractor who did the rebuild
was the same one who did Candlestick Park.
I had thought the upper deck had to be lowered so trucks
and buses could use the curb lanes. I didn't know that
the upper deck through the YBI tunnel was too low for the
entire width of the tunnel. That really DID have to be
lowered!
I love your posts! Please keep sharing your information
and stories!
