On Aug. 26, 1966 the Permanente Local lost its brakes descending the three percent grade out of the cement plant. The last 13 cars and caboose left the rails and overturned when they entered the eight-degree curve at the bottom of the grade, killing the conductor. At the time of the accident the line was being rerouted to make room for the 280 freeway.
