The UP 4014's move from the Fairplex to the former
SP -- now UP -- facility at West Colton will, according
to what I have read on TO, will be at night, and the
4014 most definitely NOT be under steam. That
locomotive will need a lot of work -- several years,
at least, before he (a "Big Boy" is a "he", right?)
will be able to be steamed up. The 4014 will be
towed dead in a short train that most likely will
have a number of other cars to assist in braking.
Ed Dickens, the UP's Manager of their Steam Program,
has said that they are going to work on the 4014's
brakes, so they will be able to help slow down the
4014 when needed during the move.

The trip from West Colton to Cheyenne will be made later,
at some yet-t-be-determined date, after the prep
work on the 4014 has been finshied so he can be towed
to Cheyenne. That long trip (1,100 miles approximately)
will be made entirely during the daytime, and will take
a while. I do not know how long it will take. During
that trip, the 4014 and train will travel no faster than
25 mph, and he will be placed on display at a number
of locations along the route. No, I do not have any
kind of schedule for that move, but it will take a while.

Remember: the move from his present site in the Fairplex
to West Colton will be made AT NIGHT. That is because the 4014
would be greatly in the way of the Metrolink trains that
run on that track if he were to use that track during the
daytime hours. Metrolink also now owns that track.

The UP Steam Crew is also working on the 2 steam locomotives
that are in front of the 4014 and are thus in the way of The
Big Move. They have to be moved out of the way in order for
the 4014 to get out of the Fairplex.

I think snap track (panel track) will be laid to get the
4014 from his present site to the Metrolink track. This is
approximately 5,900 feet -- more than a MILE the 4014 will
have to be moved to even get TO the closest tracks to the
Fairplex: the Metrolink tracks. This whole move will be
quite a sight! But unless you want to stay up all night,
you won't be able to see it, and I don't even know if the
public will be allowed into the Fairplex during that move.
I am pretty sure the public will not be allowed in there
then.

I have no idea at all where any legal parking is in that
area is. I'm not even sure exactly what route the 4014
will take to get to West Colton. Just keep checking the
web, and you will know as much as I do!
