So as long as we are wishing out loud, let me add the sentiment of another SP fan. UP is to be nothing but applauded for their decision to restore the 4014. The wish component is that the UP would see the importance of preserving (some of) the hardware of its component railroads. Since SP was totally assimilated, I think a suitable historic and iconic locomotive would go a long way to serve as a "living" metaphor for all that was SP. Perhaps UP will at some point will consider the 4294 a suitable and appropriate candidate to be restored (funding) by a third party, but subject to UP's Steam Operations mechanical standards and inspection. All contingent upon the CSRM as well. There are no other articulated locomotives that I anticipate would ever contend to be considered. Since the merger, the 4294 has become a part of the UP history. It might be a bit of a stepchild in UP's eyes, but one unique enough to warrant it as an "honorary" UP locomotive in my opinion. Congregating these locomotives every few years at Cheyenne or Sac would make for a strongly attended event. OK so I'm about to set my pops off, I just hope there is strong reverence for the unabridged history of the UP that would include "family" steam.
