Re my remark about 1040 rpm and the fact that a 500 (8.something liter) top fuel motor puts out
10,000 horsepower we're back to the Sulzers of years past. Since hp=tn/5252, as long as the torque
is relatively constant you can double the horsepower by doubling the rpm. That's always been the
allure of the high speed (1500 rpm +) diesels in locomotive service. They work overseas in much
less rigorous service but haven't gotten very far here. Have all the turbos you want but the
smaller high rpm turbos require much cleaner oil, in fact way cleaner than normal rail maintenance
normally provides. That's also the bugaboo of much of the servo and prop controlled MOW equipment,
the filtration level and changes have to be maintained for the components to live and perform. In
that reqard truck motors live a lot better life than rail motors.
