I am familiar with this stretch of track. Yes, there are a lot of crossings but all signaled and most are also gated. None are "blind" crossings and all trains do a lot of whistling. It is really easy to underestimate the speed of a train when you look straight at it and I suspect that the kid just thought he could beat it. He may have been crossing the tracks where there wasn't a crossing. He paid an awful price to pay to save a couple of minutes of wait time.
