The following prototype example used to exist, on Santa Fe's 4th District ( the Surf Line ) at Orange, CA. The CTC siding in Orange was " straight - rail " on the south end and diverging on the North end; therefore all trains moving through the area, in either direction, on either the main or the siding, had to take a diverging route to stay on the 4th District. Trains using the Olive District, enroute to or from San Diego, would use another switch just South of the Orange siding South switch. The trackage in this area was extensively modified in the mid - 1990's during the double - tracking project, and the above layout no longer exists.
I seem to recall that Redondo Jct., on the old Santa Fe 3rd District, was similar in that a Southbound train on the Western - most main had to take the diverging route through the switch or else end up on the Harbor District.
Now, if you want to talk about industrial trackage, I have photos of some downright bizarre trackage that used to exist in the alleys & warehouses between the Los Angeles River & Alameda Ave. back when Santa Fe & Espee were both trying to reach every possible customer in the area...
