There may be no direct connection in the cited mishap, but it is my observation that our culture has allowed an attitude to emerge within people, especially pedestrians, that as long as a person doesn't look in the general direction of danger, this automatically transfers responsibility for safety and injury avoidance to the operator of an approaching vehicle (e.g. car, truck, locomotive). I have seen this manifested many times while driving in a city, as a person will step off the curb, against a red signal, AND LOOK AWAY FROM ONCOMING TRAFFIC as he/she crosses the street! I view this as a side effect of the entitlement mentality, wherein an individual's safety becomes everyone else's responsibility, not theirs.
