The most common reason was to allow for increased boiler water capacity in locomotives equipped with steam generators. For example, SP's four GP9s that had the air reservoirs on the top of the long hood carried a split fuel/water tank under the frame holding 1100 gallons in each tank. Most of SP's other passenger-equipped GP9s had a split tank holding 800 gallons in each tank, although two units had 1200 gallon tanks.
