Thanks so very much for your answer. I was wrong about the heads. I knew that there was a water manifold within the "BC" block but I hadn't noticed that it went to the liner and not the head.

It sounds like the "BC" conversion consists of installing the water manifold and replacing all the liners. Not a trivial undertaking.

Three additional questions you may be able to answer:
1) Does a "BC" block use actual "C" liners, or do they use a "BC" liner that is somewhat different than an actual "C" liner? In other words, is there such a thing as a "BC" liner.
2) From your answer it sounds like there is no such thing as a "BC" head, but a "BC" conversion uses the standard "B" head. Correct? In other words, is there such a thing as a "BC" head?
3) Can a "BC" converted block take a 645 liner with the "B" head?

I was always going to ask these questions of Elmer Smoak, former WWII submariner and retired BN (and NP) diesel expert, but never got around to it before Elmer passed away last year.

I took the following pictures a couple of years ago when "B" engined GP7 1617 was having a couple of leaking power packs re-sealed. A dirty, messy job! They show some of these details.
