I recall that Santa Fe withdrew permission to use the title Super Chief after learning that Amtrak had decided to run the train with " only " a single 36 - seat diner for the entire train. Santa Fe was very protective of the Super Chief name, and they had a great deal of influence in the operation of the train. Remember that Amtrak # 3 & 4 were the only long distance trains to have 3 SDP - 40F's regularly assigned. The SDP - 40F design itself was an outgrowth of Santa Fe's FP - 45 passenger diesels.
