The E-8 had a heavy rolled steel lip around the headlight changed by EMD to a rubber grommet around the glass on E-9A's. All the E-8's had signal lights in the upper headlight and headlights in the nose door.
UP's built new E-9's had no signal lights or nosedoor headlight except the units rebuilt from earlier E's (E6?). One E-7 rebuilt to E-9 only had the upper nose headlight.
