While in Thailand, I ended up riding behind more GE locomotives than any other power save the ubiquitous Japanese DMUs.
Nowadays, most of the UM12Cs have been re-engined with two newer CAT prime movers. The newer paint schemes worn by both the 4017, and 4045 indicate that these engines have been re-engined (in about 2010-2011).
There are still several UM12Cs running with their original Cummins engines. However these are mostly confined as yard switchers and station pilots in Bangkok, Bangkok Thonburi, Ubon Ratchathani and other major terminals. In my time in Thailand, I saw many re-engined UM12Cs running on long distance trains but only one as-built UM12C leading a train.
