Flange greasers are [ were? I speak of SP on Cuesta and Tehachapi- don't get out much now] used to reduce friction on sharp curves on grades.
So- oily flanges are a good thing.
Now slow down and mull this:
For the flanges to climb the rail, they'd need friction
