But railroading is fun!

By the color and the gyralight switch, this is probably from an SP rebuild. The controller looks to have come from what I call a "cash register" type stand. This stand showed up in the late 1950s about the same time as 26L, but I wonder if it may have been used earlier by EMD with 6BL since it was also a panel mount (vs free standing) engineer's brake valve. I think the cash register stand was used on the late GP9/SD9 (of which SP did not have any SD9), the GP20, the SD24 (though I have never been in the cab of one). Was it the GP30 that first had the "console" type control stand? This design was standardized into the AAR control stand. The older stand continued to be used in switchers, a former SP MP15DC with the optional "SW1200 arrangement" has one.

Railroading as a hobby might be fun, but as a profession can be a real @#$%& at times. Yesterday's venture was replacing a sand trap, only three more to go. And fix the seal on a standby heater circulating pump that is conveniently buried without a shutoff, and an upcoming 92 day. I've also got an SW I just ripped most of the low voltage control wiring out of. Adding full mu, GPS and a new remote control system. SOme of the air work is already done. Changing from 6N to 6FN not too bad, but adding the dual ported cutout plus tee off for the remote was a nightmare. You aren't required to be crazy to work on loco air or electrical, but it helps!
