There are still several interurban operations in Europe. One of the better known ones is the Wiener Lokalbahn (WLB -- Vienna Local Railway) in Vienna, Austria.
Its electric trains share streetcar tracks with the Vienna streetcar system (running to the center of the city, near the Opera), but out in the suburbs, the WLB runs on its own right of way which is bordered by a large number of industrial customers. It interchanges with the Austrian Federal Railways and does most freight switching with small diesel locomotives, some bought second-hand from the Austrian Federal Railways. (Switching with diesels is simpler in industrial areas as there is no need for overhead wire.
