The 231 had been partially vandalized by copper thieves but the 643 had miraculously escaped (so far as I know!) and both are in a safer environment now.
As to this being done "secretly" it is becoming more of a practice for us railroads not to publicize these moves because of the vandalism they often receive enroute, particularly in yards and interchange points, and you will more than likely see this done more in the future...it is what it is!
