The original plans were to tear down the station and build a bunch of new high-rises on the site.
Only grudgingly was that changed to keep the building, but even then there were plans proposed to gut the building and make it all new inside.

Then there was only goin to be one track in the station, etc.

This whole thing has been a real estate/development thing from the start. The trains are only in the way.
