Another Cab Forward question

As most of you know, a lot of the Cab Forwards used smoke stack splitters to keep the exhaust from putting holes in the snow sheds. However a lot of them did not have the splitters; or more or less looked like they had them removed but kept the structure for them in place. Does anybody know why?

Many examples are online. For instance: [www.kohs.com]
