Re the safety system involving track magnets and magnetic pick-up planes beneath the locomotives. It may have been know as Automatic Train Stop by the engine crews and the shop forces, but in all official S,.P. documentation I have seen the nomenclature is Automatic Train Control (A.T.C.).
On the AC's the pick-up planes were eventually mounted beneath the cab floor just behind the pilot, but in the earlier classes they were originally mounted between the tender trucks. Smaller classes of locomotives carried the planes on the tender.
Another small note of interest is that the A.T.C. system was also in use on the Western Division, between Shellmound and the east end of the Carquinez Straits drawbridge.
