From Wiki:
"Hoon is a term used in Australia and New Zealand, to refer to anyone who engages in loutish, anti-social behaviours. In particular, it is used to refer to one who drives a car or boat in a manner which is anti-social by the standards of contemporary society, i.e. too fast, too noisily or too dangerously."
Antisocial behaviors while pursuing a hobby interest - eh?
Could hooning be akin to boorish FOAMING! Certainly sounds a lot like some foamers we all know and love to hate!

As to magazines, especially Trains and Model Railroader; they have had no soul for a long time, because Kalmbach Publishing sold its soul years ago. Have you noticed how devoid of any controversy their letters to the editor really are. They won't publish anything that might annoy an advertiser, hobby manufacturer, or heaven forbid - any big railroad. It's strictly party line all the way. But of course, they are trying to turn Trains into just another trade journal. And those are all very one-sided too.
