I too remember the issue of R & T where they tested a road. As I recall : " We have road tested, however we have never tested road !!! " The authors reasoned that without road the magazine would be called " & ".
They used some sort of truck - mounted elastometer to measure minute movements of Route 66 asphalt roadway under various weight loads. Yea -- R & T did do some funny road tests, including a power roller and a Kenworth, usually in the April issue as noted above.
Car & Driver magazine went downhill after David E. Davis left.
