Actually, trade journals like Railway Age don't cost you a dime if you are a "Qualified" employee of a railroad or related business; while all others pay a hefty price for their subscriptions (assuming paid subscriptions are offered at all). Hence they are 100% beholden to their advertisers.
Qualified usually means that you have purchasing decision powers; or in the performance of your duties you influence those who do. Before they "qualify" you, you usually have to fill out a questionaire that reveals to them the nature of your job. Some, such as "Progressive Railroading" are much more fussy about this than others.
As far as I know, Trains Magazine still does not do this; but they are carrying more and more ads targeting those same decision makers. Before that started (long time ago), you would often see Trains Magazine challenge conventional wisdom and the status quo. A healthy thing for the railroad industry. But I suppose not so much, for a rag that wants those they might be critiquing to advertize or buy the magazine.
Everyone nowadays is too fussin' sensitive!
