Good question. I remember work being done on the spring pads but don't remember what. The locomotive was fine going to Sacramento and back as I recall. The bearing heated up somewhere around Sunol on the way from Hunters Point to Oakdale. It is doubtful that they would have ever left San Francisco if they knew they had a bearing issue.
