Yes, this is NOT a request for any public monies. The way the exemption is written, it only covers the Delta Queen (well, maybe the Delta King, if it were ever put into operation--but since it has NO machinery, that'll never happen). The Delta Queen itself has always been funded by private industry. Yes, it's expensive to ride now (wasn't back in the 70s), and the typical passenger is NOT the kind that would ride the Faux vessels much, if any. Back in the day, if you read industry reviews of various cruise ships, the DQ was at the bottom of "amenities" offered (like spas, pools, etc.) but at the top of the list for Repeat Passengers. Her final cruise had only 4 non-repeat passengers! (and I'm still paying off the loan to take that trip, but as the ad says, "Priceless!". No regrets here!).
I probably will never afford to do such a trip again, but others should have the chance, and history should be kept alive. There is no safety issue; the DQ has an impeccable safety record.
