NASCAR 350 has been held at Sonoma nee Infineon nee Sears Point Raceway in June for many years. Have heard no rumors about that ending anytime soon. It's unusual in that the cars have to be able to turn right as well as left ...
Don't read anything into this affair that might suggest a new Amtrak line. These are pure charters for a single purpose - giving people with NASCAR race tickets a way to get there that doesn't involve hours of fighting traffic on roads that were never intended for that amount of it. I applaud the tour operator for making the effort. Amtrak, the crews, and the railroads make a little extra money too. There is no public operating money involved in this: they're using equipment that's otherwise just sitting around on a weekend. This is a classic case of Find a Need and Fill It using what's available - minimum investment.
"Is it logistically possible to bring in two trains..." Physically, perhaps, though the loading area isn't very large. Practically: I'm sure FRA wouldn't allow, nor would the railroad, more than one passenger train on the line at a time. Remember: no signals - for practical purposes a long industrial lead - so when the train is there is has to "own" the railroad. Yes, there are ways around it, but getting that approved would probably kill the idea with paperwork.
I wonder: do the train crews get complimentary tickets to the race? Would be nice ...
