Speaking of rail, once I installed a new piece of rail, we had just received for our branch, and saved the foot or so I had to cut off. I wanted to test the hardness, compared to some of our old rail in the bone yard. The theory is that the high manganese alloy used for rails and frogs and stuff is what we call 'work-hardening' steel. And, it is. My highly precision test equipment (file, center punch, hammer, drill, and grinder) proved that it is so. Many of you know this already, but I remember trying to convince my gang that fact. We had some rail rolled before the turn of the century, and you couldn't hardly put a dent in it. It was Bethleham, also.
