While few, if any, railroads actually rolled their own rail, most railroads--in days gone by--did have their own specifications for rail. UP 90 pound rail has a taller web than 90 pound rail specified by the NP and so on. Today, concrete ties are cast to individual railroad specifications--mainly pertaining to rail angle on the top of the tie as each railroad has it's own theory as to what angle the rail wears the best.
