Submarines were sleeping quarters, and were invented by an Espee brakeman ( ??? ) in Indio back in the days before air conditioning. They resembled a small quonset hut that had water pipes on the roof. The water running down the roof and sides would help cool the interior. I believe they were replaced by air conditioned motel rooms and then outlawed by the State of California as being unhealthy. ( I guess the local rats really liked them. ) I believe the Espee employee died in the Tortuga wreck???
