I dont think interest is decreasing at all. Time and money are hard to come by when one is younger, and you have to take into account the time and money (and space) with raising a family. I know many younger people (I'm in my mid-30s) who are into the hobby, but have no time/space/money to emerse themselves in it as they would like to currently.

I'm working on a layout in my basement with my friends and I have to say it is slow going with a wife and 7 seven year old.

On the flip side, my son and wife love the hobby (and railfanning).

Naturally as one gets older, they are fond of their memories. I don't believe it means the upcoming generation won't see the romance in railroading, they'll just see it from a different generation's point of view.
