I recall Santa Fe was upset that Amtrak was planning on running their version of The Super Chief with only one diner for a train capacity of 300; I believe this was in 1974 ??? So Santa Fe said this was not in the tradition of the Super Chief, and withdrew permission for Amtrak to use the Chief names ( Texas Chief also ). Still, Amtrak would use most of the Santa Fe's Super Chief / El Capitan cars until the arrival of Superliners.
