The Guinness Book of World Records says the longest freight train on record was a BHT-Billiton ore train in Western Australia in 2001. It consisted of 682 loaded cars and was 4.6 miles long. Eight GE AC6000 units operating as DPU's provided the motive power. By the way, it had only one crewman.

Imagine waiting at a grade crossing for 682 are to pass.
