There is no limit. In 1970 I was the rear brakeman on a train that exceeded ten thousand feet over Donner Pass. We had six units on the front and another five units as a mid train helper.

Not too long after the UP-SP merger, the UP ran a train out of Texas to Southern California that beyond belief in regard to its length. I can't recall how many cars, but it had several hundred cars.
