The rule kicks in on any rail over 400 feet long. UP is the process of completing a new rail welding plant on the CCT at port Stockton and it will take a single rail rolled to 480 feet long and then with just three sticks of 480 make 2 welds to make a 1440 foot standard string of welded rail where now UP takes 80 foot rails and has to make 17 welds to make the same string. Plant will be in operation at the end of February 2015.
