"Hot rivets" aren't necessarily heat treated because the heating process used to make them plastic enough to drive plays hell with any prior heat treating. Different types of alloys (and metals) are used for rivets.

The crash management apparatus consists of several things, one if which is the break-away coupler. The pin (probably a flat key) which connects the coupler to the draft gear is designed to break, absorbing energy. This is in addition to the compressibility of the cab's crush zone.
