Margaret and all. While I agree that the banksters, consultants, vendors, will cream a huge chunk of the cost of HSR, the fact is that is how ALL public works function. Taxation is the extortion from the productive working class in order to enrich the bribers/oligopoly who own and run the country.
All that said, HSR AND a comprehensive network of slower rail services are needed to improve our state (and much of the rest of the US). Because the corruption is not going to be corrected anytime soon, I am in favor of HSR much as I would have been in favor of the transcontinental RR even with the hindsight knowledge of how that, too, was wholesale looting of the treasury.
