What it is, with this area, is that the GN built the line along Puget Sound in some places tucked up under mud and sand cliffs that used to be prehistoric shoreline. Ever build a sand castle and watch what happens when the tide comes in? The constant winter rains here turn that stuff to the consistency of milk shakes There's no way to shore that up unless you have bottomless pockets, and even then, it'll erode from behind the shoring walls. The fun part is seeing all the McMansions built by Californians that flooded this region back in the 90's perched right on the edge of the cliffs. Won't be long and they'll be coming down too. The sea giveth...and the sea taketh away.
