There were quite a few more in the years right up to before EUKA started up...Arcata & Mad River alone served no fewer than six sawmills in 1979, down from 12 at the dawn of the 1970s...however, there were quite a few other issues on-going in the timber industry at the time, the bumpy economic times of the late 1970s did in sawmills all over the west coast. Of the six mills on the A&MR in 1979, only two remained when the Island Mountain tunnel reopened in 1980. I would guess the NWP had similar customer base losses at that time.
