I recall reading that Northern Pacific padded their land grants by filing surveys for virtually every Mountain Pass through the Washington Cascades, even though they only seriously considered Snoqualmie Pass, ( later built on by Milwaukee Road ) and Stampede Pass. These land grants included Tacoma & White Pass, and even Mt. Saint Helens !!!
