Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley are great examples of the SP land grant "checkerboard", especially when you look at the every other "worthless" section that the Indian tribes got as "reservation". Now, these large sections in the center of Palm Springs are no longer worthless, especially to the tribes which have built casinos on these parcels.

It is my understanding that the National trail from Santa Fe to Needles was the first federally funded "road" to be built in the US. Beale built this first wagon road across New Mexico and Arizona (later US 66) which preceded the building of the Atlantic and Pacific (ATSF/BNSF). Did this road also receive land grants in addition to direct funding from federal government?

This is a great little collection of really cool history of the early US in GIS.
