I really liked the Southern ads that were in "Trains Magazine". There would be a one ton crate of things like sweaters sitting on a smooth mainline and the president of the railroad (can't remember his name) standing beside it posing. The ad would say that this crate was shipped 250 miles on one gallon of fuel. It's kind of a false statement, depending on how you do the math, but if you multiply the amount of crates in a string of boxcars, and the amount of fuel to run the train, it's true.
I imagine that the time sensitive short haul will forever be owned by trucks.
