The (now cut-off due to light rail) Folsom Wye is where the Folsom historical rail group stores its stuff - several cars, speeders, a small diesel, varoius bits of maintenance equipment. The Placerville Branch (the wye, and the track up the hill) is owned by the City of Folsom within the City limits. There are bike trails more or less paralleling (but not replacing - yes, it's possible to do that Brian!) the line except where it's too close to a major street (along East Bidwell).

Ride light rail to Iron Point (warning: Outlet Mall!), then ride the "rail trail" bike path alongside the light rail line (along Folsom Blvd.). Be careful at intersections (drivers don't pay attention to bikes and peds at the signals)! Note the re-use by light rail of a former railroad bridge over Willow Creek (between Blue Ravine Rd. and Parkshore Dr.). Between Bidwell St. and Natoma St. you have to ride along a frontage rd. - that's where the wye is. Check out Karen's Bakery at the end of the line (Leidedorff & Gold Lake). There's also a large free (3-6 hour time limit) parking garage at the end of the line, and several train history items to check out around the plaza. Bring a designated driver (or use light rail, daytime only) if you plan to investigate the establishments along Sutter St. And if you're a diehard and continue up the American River bike trail toward Beale's Point (steep hill!), some minor remnants of the line that ran between Folsom and Lincoln (gone for close to 150 years) can be found if you know what you're looking for.

To follow the Placerville line on a bike, ride LR to Glenn Dr. (large parking lot at the station is usually empty on weekends), then go up Glenn Dr. about 1/4 mile to a trail entrance. Get on the bike path (turn left, still following Glenn Dr.) - technically, it's the Humbug-Willow Creek Trail. After a bit, you cross the tracks and turn hard right to follow them. The trail does move away from the tracks at times, but is generally pretty close, up to just before Oak Ave. Parkway; the main trail turns left to follow the creeks, but you can go right through some parking lots to get on East Bidwell (scary, but there are bike lanes) up to Iron Point. The tracks closely follow East Bidwell from Oak Ave. Parkway to Iron Point. Note the lack of any crossing protection - one reason why the tourist rides start at In n Out Burger past Iron Point. At Iron Point Rd. (just before the freeway), cross to the SE corner and pick up a short segment of bike trail again, ending at Old Placerville Rd. and the boarding area for speeder runs. No more trail after that, but Old Placerville Rd. is closed for bike events once or twice a year and usually doesn't have a ton of traffic anyway so you can follow the tracks a couple of miles farther. The crossing gates at White Rock Rd. were reinstalled to permit more tourist trips, but so far it's only speeders.
