I love this kind of answer - let's just solve it with lenses and not deal with finding solutions. First off I don't know one railfan who has died because he trespassed. I do know of many, many instances where a railfan saw a serious problem either on the trains or in rails themselves and called the railroad to notify them of these problems and probably saved lives and lots of $$$'s. I hate to say it, UDEUH, but all done by trespassing railfans. Check out all those beautiful photographs in calendars put out by the railroads....most taken by trespassing railfans. I'd like to see some solutions and some leeway given for a hobby that means more good then harm to the railroads and UDEUH, your solution will never happen.
Better a felony record than death by train.
Is it absolutely necessary to railfan and trespass at the same time? If you think it is then you've got no place in the Gene Pool in the first place. Just buy a zoom lens for your camera and move on
