I was afraid that might be the reason/excuse UP would likely use, since it is a pretty old engine. A friend warned me that even getting moves of fully FRA compliant roller bearing equipped private cars was getting to be a problem. It is always good to ask them, if it can be done cheaply, they can only say no...
None the less, rumors and statements that aren't as yet true, are not always helpful. I know that several engines with friction bearings have had to be moved by truck in the last few years....even without that, rail moves would have been prohibitively costly, and trucking them was just plain cheaper. It's just another cost of such a move, nothing that difficult. I helped load my first engine on a truck back in 1969.... It's nothing new.
